135. Introducing the Cornett – This instrument is not a trumpet, and it was not a predecessor to the cornet. It’s sort of a cross between a trumpet and a woodwind – you buzz your lips just like on the trumpet, but the length of the instrument is changed by opening and closing holes instead of using valves. Plus, it was made out of wood, not brass!

The cornett (also called cornetto or zink) was VERY popular from 1500 to 1650 AD, but I’ve only seen it used once in a concert, and that was almost 50 years ago! You can read more about this on Wikipedia – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornett.

The ”gunpowder plot” mentioned was a plot to assassinate King James in 1605 AD by blowing up the House of Lords with 36 barrels of gunpowder. Fortunately, a tip to the authorities let them disable the bomb without anyone getting hurt.

Talking about Queen Elizabeth I, he mentions “sackbuts.” These were the predecessors of the trombone and not that much different from modern instruments. In the enlargement of the painting that follows, there is a sackbut near the bottom. (If you wish, here’s a video you can watch on the sackbut: Introducing the Sackbut.)

Once the speaker disappears, you can stop the video. Nothing else happens.

Except for the Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble, these are all pieces from the Baroque period – 1600-1750 AD. Valves weren’t invented until about 1815, so this music was written for the natural trumpet.

The Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble piece is for trumpets in 3 different keys and can be played on 3 natural trumpets (pitched in D, C, and F). Each part is played by itself, and then all three parts are played at the same time.

Edward Tarr was an American trumpeter who moved to Germany and promoted the usage of the natural trumpet to make it more popular. He was also an historian and wrote an extensive history of the trumpet in German. I saw him play when he lived in the USA and later when he had been living in Germany. The first time, he sounded like an American, but the second time, he spoke English with a German accent. It was pretty funny!

It when the light shines

In the early concertos, these were improvised by the soloist. Today, classical soloists rarely improvise cadenzas, but jazz soloists do this all the time. The cadenza Elmer is playing was written by the famous Russian trumpeter, Timofei Dokshidzer, not by the composer (Alexander Arutunian).
