The old HSU Trumpets web page, The Henderson Trumpet Page, is still online at https://fac.hsu.edu/bucknej/. Most of the 600 pages formerly on that site were transferred to this site.  Information not transferred was only needed by current students at Henderson. (The old site is archived at https://web.archive.org/web/20230307143512/https://fac.hsu.edu/bucknej/)

I don’t remember when The Henderson Trumpet Page was first posted, but it was no later than Thursday, September 01, 2005 using Microsoft FrontPage. This was followed by an extensive switch to hsutrumpets.com using Joomla by Thursday, May 20, 2010.

Hackers struck many times, including uploading viruses and spoofing a bank in Brazil by adding hidden pages to the website. Deleting these pages was annoying but took little time. This was followed by a major online attack, which hid the hacker’s code in the site’s HTML code. This was difficult to detect and virtually impossible to remove.

From February 21, 2017 – “I’m sure some of you have noticed the redirects occurring at hsutrumpets.com.  Someone has hacked into the code of certain pages…at this point, I don’t know how to remove it.  The file structure is not intuitive, so I cannot find the source code to make corrections.

“I’m planning a complete overhaul of the site this summer to increase security measures.  I would love to start now, but I fear that it’s going to be a BIG job and the site could be offline for months if I don’t wait until I have more time.

“My great appreciation to those of you determined enough to get around the redirects to get to this page.”

From May 8, 2017 – “HSUTrumpets has been attacked by hackers, so the site will be offline for the immediate future. My apologies to everyone who cannot visit this site. A complete site upgrade is needed to upgrade the site’s security, so it will be a while before HSUtrumpets can go back online. We’ll be back as soon as we can!”

A switch to WordPress was made, and the site was online by July 10, 2017 – “We’re excited to be back online following a number of attacks by hackers (see Hacked! for details) which finally overwhelmed our limited resources.  After a massive reorganization of the site, we’re back!  And better than ever — the online searchable recital database is working after being unavailable for many years.  Over the next few months, we hope to add web pages for all of the 270+ Henderson trumpet studio alumni.

To prevent more attacks, several WordPress plugins were installed and constantly updated. Continuous weekly external scans and monthly internal site scans helped monitor and protect the site. A lot of work, but it kept the hackers out!
